Quantitative Historical Linguistics

Dr. Jelena Prokić, post-doc

Jelena Prokić finished her Phd on quantitative approaches to dialect diversity in 2010 at the University of Groningen. In her thesis she worked on the problems of sequence alignment in linguistics and application of clustering techniques in dialect classification. Her main research interests are quantitative approaches to language relatedness based on transparent linguistically-motivated models that explain the origin and evolution of changes in languages. Since 2010 she is a member of the Research Unit "Quantitative Language Comparison" at the LMU Munich and University of Marburg.

Within the research unit "Quantitative Language Comparison", Jelena Prokić works as a post-doc in the project "Quantitative modeling of historical-comparative linguistics: Unraveling the phylogeny of native South American languages" whose main goal is to uncover and clarify phylogenetic relationships between native South American languages. She is responsible for developing techniques for measuring distances between languages based on the data digitized in the project, which includes dictionaries and word lists.
